SURFACE SUPPORT, is a group exhibition of sculptural video works curated by Amanda Schmitt.
The title of the exhibition alludes to the French artistic movement of the 1960s, “Supports/Surfaces,” a group of artists that formed around their shared interest in the materiality of painting. These artists subverted the contemporary emphasis on the “image” in painting to focus on the physicality of the material, bringing into consideration the apparatus which could hold an image.
The omnipresence of the digital screen in contemporary life, ever closer to our bodies, has made it the dominant visual surface of the present. SURFACE SUPPORT is about contemporary works in moving-images that explore the outer-limits of this physical and technological support. The works in this exhibition erode the boundaries between content and container, inviting a collision between virtual reality and objecthood.
The artists in SURFACE SUPPORT are joined not by their aesthetic sensibilities, but by their mutual interest in creating artworks that marry their virtual presence to their material presence; a persistent thing and an evanescent stream of images.
